This photo looks south along Park Avenue from 48th Street, showing the New York Central Building, now known as the Helmsley Building. The tower was built in 1929 as part of “Terminal City,” the complex of buildings surrounding the new Grand Central Terminal. It housed the headquarters of the New York Central Railroad until it merged with Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1960s. The company went bankrupt in the 1970s and sold the building to the Helmsley family’s company, who renamed and restored it.
