This photo looks east along West 130th Street in Harlem, better known as “Astor Row.” These unusual homes were built in the early 1880s as a speculative development by William Backhouse Astor Jr (husband of Caroline Astor & father of John Jacob Astor IV who died on the Titanic). Their deep front gardens & wide porches are almost suburban in style, rarely seen elsewhere in Manhattan.
