This photo was taken on the waterfront of the Lower East Side beneath the Williamsburg Bridge, looking east toward Brooklyn. Completed in 1903, it is 1,601 feet from tower to tower and was the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1924 when the Bear Mountain Bridge opened across the Hudson.
