This photo shows the east side of St. Nicholas Avenue between 152nd & 153rd Streets at the northern end of Harlem. This area is part of the historically elite section of Harlem known as “Sugar Hill” (because the people who lived up here were living “the sweet life”). When the first houses were built in the blocks around St. Nicholas in the 150s, it was thought that this area would develop as an uptown version of the mansion districts of 5th Avenue downtown. This didn’t exactly pan out, but lovely blocks of mansions & brownstones like these went up, giving the neighborhood a distinct charm.
