18 East 94th Street is part of a row of elaborate townhouses just east of Central Park, built around the turn of the 20th century. This area of the Upper East Side is known as Carnegie Hill, as Andrew Carnegie chose to build his mansion up here, at 91st Street, when most of New York’s elite families were still living below 59th Street. This was a bold move, but helped to lure the city’s wealthy northward.
